In almost all circumstances, the non-custodial parent will pay child support to the custodial parent. New Jersey has established guidelines for child support. While there are child support guidelines set by the state of New Jersey, parents can have a consent support agreement drafted and signed by a judge, as long as the interests of the child are protected. When the guidelines are used to determine support levels there are three types of costs that are examined: fixed costs; variable costs; and controlled costs. Fixed costs are expenses that are generated regardless of which parent the child is staying with at any given time. Variable costs are expenses that occur only when the child is present. Controlled costs include things such as clothes and entertainment that may vary between parents.
